Shibori

Shibori is the Japanese word for a technique in which fabric is shaped, bound, and dyed. We’ve adopted this word in the Western world to mean any bound, shaped-resist dyeing technique for cloth. It encompasses a variety of traditional methods of binding that include folding and clamping fabric into shape; stitching and gathering it; wrapping it around a pole; or binding it with ties. The fabric is then placed into a dye bath so that the bound portion of the fabric resists the dye and leaves interesting patterns and shapes.
