Ikat

The World Imagined
(image detail)

Ikat is derived from the Malay-Indonesian word mengikat which means “to tie or to bind.” Designs come from wrapping and re-wrapping yarn, dyeing and re-dyeing it before it is woven.

Small changes in color are made during the weaving process with embroidery. Once the cloth is woven it is beetled (beaten with a mallet on a very hard and smooth surface) to mark the cloth and give it a sense of history.
